The roar came again, this time more easily recognized. Through the windows of the sunroom, the sky began to darken to a familiar gray.

“A summer storm,” Bryan said. He whistled again to the little bird who obediently hopped back over to his shoulder for a little nuzzle before returning to her perch in the giant fern. “We don’t want to miss this.”

“Miss what? I’ve seen a storm before.”

“Not here with the Ashwood coven, you haven’t. Come on.”

What’s so much more special about a storm here than one down the road?

Alice looked up as the rumbling grew louder. The china in the dining room next door rattled in the cabinets loudly. Static filled the air and sent her stomach into little tumbles of anxiety and excitement. “What the…”

“A storm!” she heard Elle squeal in another room. “Finally!”

Anyone who wasn’t already outside with the carnivorous plant seemed to all head for the door if the noises upstairs were any indication.

Bryan took her hand again and led her toward the room in the sunroom that led outdoors. Even outside, he didn’t release her hand, and she wasn’t going to be the first to let go either. They walked like that around to the front of the building where the entirety of the coven had congregated on the yard.

A few feet from them her plant curled up in a little ball, protecting itself from the falling rain. It started slow, a few drops at most, but within a few minutes was coming down as hard as any storm.

As they met up with the others, Alice noticed that everyone shared the same excitement that Bryan had for the occasion. Some had grabbed umbrellas or rain jackets on the way out. Others left as they were. Brandi didn’t bother with shoes at all.

Bryan released her hand when the group noticed their presence, and Alice missed it immediately. Water affinity he might be, but Bryan kept her as grounded as a rock.

They spread out on the front lawn, each of them looking skyward with unbridled excitement. Even Carina, vain thing that she was, had no compunction about getting soaked. Her face was pure joy as she closed her eyes and tilted her chin up to welcome the wind and rain.

The sky, dark now from the clouds that descended upon them, lit up and tendrils of lightning spread out among the clouds like an electrified spider’s web. Several amongst the coven gasped in delight, and a few counted between light and thunder. The noise boomed overhead not five seconds later, letting them know the storm was practically on top of them at this point.

“This is a good sign, Brothers and Sisters,” Blair said from the middle of the crowd.

The high priestess was in a waterproof cloak now and stood in the center of them all. Even with the hood obscuring her features, Blair’s happiness was palpable. She lifted both hands up to the sky, her left holding a gnarled old root.

“We, the Ashwood Falls coven, greet you!” she called out to the storm.
